Exponential backoff’s power comes from matching the typical recovery curve of overloaded systems. When a service is overwhelmed, it needs time proportional to the severity of overload—not constant additional time. The exponential curve creates “breathing room” that grows with failure count.

The canonical implementation of exponential backoff is almost always a capped exponential backoff. The capping mechanism is crucial to prevent delays from growing to impractical lengths. The formula is as follows:

Google SRE’s retry budget pattern provides a global defense against retry amplification. The implementation uses two complementary limits:

Per-request limit: Maximum 3 retry attempts per request. After 3 failures, propagate the error to the caller.
